The Bard Veterinary Group takes its name and logo from Scotland's most famous poet Robert Burns whose statue stands in the centre of Dumfries town.

Vaccinations

Puppies can be vaccinated from 8 weeks of age - this consists of 2 injections at 2 weeks apart. This means that most puppies can be fully protected at 12 weeks of age.

Booster vaccinations are on a yearly basis.

For those owners who wish to track if their dogs immunity is adequate we can send blood samples away to the laboratory. In some cases a limited vaccination may then be necessary.

Puppy vaccinations usually include the following disease conditions:

Distemper virus
Parvovirus
Leptospirosis (2 types)
infectious hepatitis
canine influenza virus

Canine infectious bronchitis (Kennel Cough) is an intranasal vaccine (drops into the nostril) and can be included if you intend to Kennel your pet each year.

Rabies vaccination - this is required for dogs going abroad using the PETS Travel Scheme.

Neutering

Dogs

Castration involves removing the testicles and is usually carried out after 6 months of age.

Bitches

Spaying/Ovariohysterectomy is usually carried out 2-3 months after the bitch has been in season. This involves removing both the uterus and the ovaries.

Worms - Dogs and Cats

Most pet owners are aware that our pets can harbour worms in their intestines, but not everyone is aware of the consequences of these worm burdens.

Roundworms affect all animals, e.g. dogs have dog worms and cats have cat worms.

Unfortunately, worm eggs can pass to other species such as man, and if ingested can migrate to parts of the body such as the back of the eye causing serious problems. Although this is very rare we can easily prevent it by worming our pets routinely every 3 to 4 months. This is especially important if there are children in the house.
