The Bard Veterinary Group takes its name and logo from Scotland's most famous poet Robert Burns whose statue stands in the centre of Dumfries town.

Birds - Budgies , canaries, parakeets, and parrots. There are numerous varieties. It is important to get a pet bird from a reputable licenced breeder or pet store.

There are a number of important things to consider when owning a bird. The correct size of cage and type of feeding is essential. Some of these species are susceptible to several different infectious conditions some of which can affect humans.

We would be happy to advise should you be considering buying a bird as a pet.

Pigeons - We do offer a veterinary service to pigeon fanciers.

There are numerous conditions affecting pigeons many of which the learned fancier will be able to recognise. Some conditions however do require special diagnostic procedures and more specific treatment.

It is important to remember that short courses of antibiotic given to pigeons for non specific purposes will lead to the build up of resistant bacteria, this then results in that antibiotic being rendered useless when it is really needed.

Antibiotics should only be used under the direction of a veterinary surgeon.

Game Birds - Locally a number of estates breed pheasants.

Serious outbreaks of disease can occasionally be a problem.

We need to establish a correct diagnosis before treatment is supplied therefore we need to see dead birds so that they can be sent to the local VI Lab for post mortem.
